The era of “research agents”: how do you optimise your site for AI agents?

Your traffic is stagnating, your clicks are falling, and yet your revenue is rising. That is not a statistical anomaly, it is the reality of the AI agent era.

Until now, we optimised our sites for human eyes and ranking algorithms. But in 2026, the game has changed. With the emergence of autonomous search agents (entities able to book a flight, compare complex quotes or fill a shopping basket on the user’s behalf), the traditional customer journey is fragmenting.

The problem? These agents are not sensitive to your magnificent visual guidelines or your punchy slogans. They look for raw data, structure and reliability. Spoiler alert: if your site is nothing more than a visual shop window without a technical “brain”, you become invisible to the new decision engines.

So how do you turn your web platform into an irresistible playground for AI? How do you move from classic SEO to AEO (Agent Engine Optimization)? A dive behind the scenes of tomorrow’s web, where visibility is no longer decided in the search bar, but in the ability to execute.

Understanding the AI agent revolution: from search engine to execution engine

To understand how to optimise your site today, you first need to grasp a fundamental paradigm shift. Until now, we lived in the era of the search engine: a user typed a query, and Google acted as an ultra-fast librarian handing them a list of books (your websites). The user then had to go in, leaf through and find the information themselves.

With AI Agents (such as OpenAI Operator, Google Jarvis or the autonomous agents based on Claude 5), we are entering the era of the execution engine.

The difference between searching and delegating

The AI agent does not simply find information; it has a mission.

  • Yesterday (search): “Find me the best hotels in Geneva with a spa.” (The user compares 5 tabs.)
  • Tomorrow (agent): “Book me a room for tomorrow night in a 4-star hotel with a spa in Geneva, near the station, for under CHF 300, and send the confirmation to my calendar.”

The agent does not “browse” for the pleasure of seeing your design. It scans the web with a result objective. For it, your site is no longer an aesthetic destination, but an actionable database.

How does an agent reason?

Unlike the old indexing bots that looked for repeated keywords, the agent uses semantic reasoning. It breaks your content down to extract raw facts:

  1. The intent: what does this page actually offer?
  2. The proof: what are the prices, the opening hours, the stock levels or the signs of reliability (reviews, certifications)?
  3. The action: can I technically book, buy or make contact without human intervention?

Why classic SEO is faltering

Traditional SEO rested on algorithmic “seduction”: you optimised to please a robot that imitated a human. Today, the AI agent is a “super-expert” user who ignores the frills. Marketing fluff (filler content) becomes an obstacle. If the AI takes too long to extract clear information from your prose, it will move on to the competing site, better structured, more readable, more “agent-friendly”.

Broadly, the agent revolution shifts the cursor from awareness (being seen) to immediate usefulness (being used).

The 3 pillars of AEO (Agent Engine Optimization)

While SEO aimed to please the algorithm in order to attract humans, AEO aims to provide a data infrastructure that AI can ingest and act on without friction. To turn your site into an “agent-ready” platform, you need to work on three fundamental areas.

1. Structured data: the native language of agents

For an AI agent, your code speaks far more loudly than your text. Schema.org tags are no longer just about getting “stars” in search results; they are becoming the very structure of your digital brain.

  • Semantic completeness: tagging a product is no longer enough. You have to tag its variants, its real-time availability, its delivery areas and its relationships with other entities.
  • JSON-LD as the standard: JSON-LD is the agents' language of choice. By structuring your data rigorously, you let AI understand instantly that “Geneva” is not just a word but a geographic service area tied to a specific offer.
  • Avoid ambiguity: an AI agent hates doubt. The more precise your metadata, the less likely the AI is to hallucinate wrong information about your company.

2. Technical accessibility and APIs: giving AI “hands”

An AI agent “navigates” differently from a human. It does not use a mouse, it calls functions. If your site is a fortress of heavy JavaScript, intrusive pop-ups or multi-step forms, the agent will fail in its task.

  • The API-first approach: the big trend of 2026 is openness. Offering public API endpoints for your catalogues or booking systems lets agents talk directly to your database, without going through the visual interface.
  • The file ai.txt : just like the robots.txt handled crawlers, the file ai.txt is emerging as the way to define what AI agents are allowed to do or read on your site. It is your governance protocol.
  • The end of pointless barriers: aggressive CAPTCHAs and overly rigid conversion funnels are the enemies of agents. Optimising here means simplifying the technical journey so a script can travel it end to end.

3. Information density vs marketing “fluff”

People love stories (storytelling); the AI agent looks for points of proof. To be selected by an AI that compares dozens of options in a few milliseconds, your content must change its tone.

  • Raw data first: include comparison tables, clear technical specification lists and structured FAQs. The denser the data and the easier it is to extract, the more the agent values it.
  • Authority through precision: instead of saying “We are the leaders in Geneva”, say “We have supported 450 Geneva companies through their digital transition since 2015”. The agent values verifiable facts that feed its trust score.
  • “Actionable” content: every page has to answer the question: “What action can an agent carry out here?”. If the answer is unclear, the page is useless to AI.

Measuring success in the “Zero-Visit” era

This is the great paradox of 2026: your SEO strategy can be a huge success even as your Google Search Console shows a drop in organic traffic. Why? Because if an AI agent finds the answer on your site and passes it directly to the user, the “click” disappears, but the value remains. To steer your performance, you have to change dashboard.

1. The citation rate: the new “Position Zero”

In the past, the Holy Grail was to be first on Google. Today, success is measured by your citation rate by LLMs (Large Language Models).

The question: when ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini answer a question, which sources do they use to build their answer?

The KPI: it is no longer about counting visits but about analysing how often your brand is cited as an authoritative reference in AI-generated answers.

2. Shadow attribution (inferred traffic)

If a user asks their agent: “Find me the sharpest AI agency in Geneva”, the agent will scan the web, see that Smart Impact comes up consistently in reliable sources, and add it to its selection. The user may end up calling you directly or searching for you by your brand name.

The challenge: this traffic will show up as “direct” or “brand search”, masking the groundwork done in AEO.

The solution: monitor the correlation between your semantic improvements and the rise in overall brand awareness.

3. Agent success rate (Action Success Rate)

For e-commerce or service sites, the critical new KPI is an agent’s ability to complete an action.

Does your site let a script get all the way through a quote request without an error?

Every “agent failure” (a bot that gives up because the form is unreadable to it) is a lost sale, as real as a basket abandoned by a human.

Worth knowing: in 2026, log analysis becomes your best friend. Identifying when the agents pass through (OpenAI-Bot, Google-Other) and understanding where they stop on your site is the new technical SEO.

Checklist: is your site ready for 2026?

Moving to AEO is not a project to put off until tomorrow. It is a structural update that separates the companies that will be “cited” from those that will be forgotten. Here is your roadmap for the coming months:

  • Structured data audit: do not settle for basic markup. Use advanced schemas (ProfessionalService, Offer, Location) and make sure they are free of errors in Google's testing tool.
  • AI readability test: paste the text of your key pages into an LLM (Claude 5, GPT-5) and ask it: “What are the 3 concrete actions an agent can carry out here?”. If the answer is vague, rewrite.
  • Optimising “data density”: replace long marketing paragraphs with bullet lists, price tables and clear technical specifications.
  • Speed and performance: an AI agent has a “time budget”. If your server takes 3 seconds to respond, the agent will move on to the next source. Aim for a flawless Core Web Vitals score.
  • Setting up the file ai.txt : set the permissions for AI bots explicitly, to protect your data while giving legitimate research agents easy access.
  • Simpler forms: reduce the number of fields and use standard HTML labels so that autofill agents meet no obstacles.

From visibility to usefulness

The web is not dying, it is becoming invisible.

For twenty years, digital success was measured by the ability to attract a human eye to a screen. Tomorrow, it will be measured by the ability to be the building block of an answer formulated by an artificial intelligence.

Optimising for AI agents is not a mere technical trick; it is a philosophy of transparency and efficiency. By making your site “actionable” by machines, you give yourself the luxury of being present where decisions are genuinely made: in the user’s ear, through their personal assistant.

The question is no longer whether you will appear on page 1 of Google, but whether you will be the option the AI chooses to act on.
